Gettysburg - Part of The First Modern War
So why did people call the Civil War the first "Modern War"? This was mainly because much of the weaponry used during the war led up the design in weapons used today. In fact, there is actually a modern weapon named the Enfield. Advancements in technology made better weapons available that could inflict more damage on soldiers. "More innovations and experimentation took place during the Civil War than during all other previous wars combined".

The Civil War is often called the first modern war and the last of the ancient wars. During the Civil War, weaponry developed the most dramatically in all of history with improvements in technology and major improvements in weaponry. It was the last major war to use wooden ships in combat and the first to use armored ships. Also, first put into use were the railroads for quicker transport of troops and supplies and the telegraph, making communication between commanders on the battlefields available. After the war, experts continued to build on technology, inventing the Gatling gun, torpedoes, ironclads and submarines, making newer, more effective weapons for future conflicts. These advances in weaponry most affect the average soldier fighting in the field whose life is directly involved.
